Termite Species on Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is home to two main termite species, Pacific dampwood termites and subterranean termites.

Dampwood termites thrive in humid coastal climates and feed on damp or decaying wood, often found in logs, stumps, or moisture-prone structures. They’re large (15–25 mm) with a dark brown coloration.

Subterranean termites, although smaller, are much more destructive. These termites live underground and build narrow mud tubes to reach wooden beams and foundations.

Where Termites Are Found in Homes

Termites are often found in crawl spaces, decks, basements, or wooden frames near moisture. The best way to get rid of termites starts with finding the source early and addressing the humidity or wood-to-ground contact that allows colonies to spread.

Signs You May Have Termites

Common warning signs include soft or hollow-sounding wood, mud tubes along walls, or finding small piles of sawdust-like dust, known as frass.

Discarded wings near windows or doors may also indicate a nearby swarm. Early inspection is essential to prevent structural damage and costly repairs.
