Silverfish and their close relative, the firebrat, are commonly found in our region. These insects are generally silvery or brown in color, and range in size between 4-10mm. These insects prefer humid dark areas to hide and breed in. They feed on strange things, including: paper, cardboard, wallpaper, book bindings, starch, curtains, various fabrics, and cellulose which is found in home insulation.
This insect looks for dark, humid and cool places where it can hide. It is therefore usually found in bathrooms, basements or kitchens. It can be found under sinks, near bookcases, closets, plinths, door or window frames, or inside walls. Once they discover their source of food, they do not venture very far away. Silverfish are commonly found in tubs or sinks, where they become trapped after seeking a drink.
Prevention methods
Try and minimize the amount of corrugated cardboard and paper recyclables. Monitor your homes humidity levels .Frequent vacuuming especially around baseboards and behind furniture will help prevent silverfish from establishing nesting sites.
